SES (Search Engine Strategies) New York 2010 Recap by Dominik Johnson

My blog posts are mostly written in German but this one should be in English since the SES (Search Engine Strategies) conference, which I attended, was in New York, even my blog audience is located more in Germany, Austria, Swiss and some other countries where German online marketers at the moment are… Why I wirte posts in German, even I know the audience isn‘t that big (185 millions people speaks German)? This question isn‘t that easy to answer… I would like to start this #sesny recap with a small poll:

The SES New York 2k10 was awesome. The Search Engine Strategies conference in New York is the No.1! I‘m quite sure Hong Kong will be great as well! Anyhow if you live in a country where the SES is (e.g. England, Germany, Canada), you should (if you‘re an online-marketer) attend it, not `cause you meet interesting white and black hat SEOs, no, you can network with experts within the online marketing branch and learn about topics such as PPC management, keyword research, SEO, social media, local, mobile, link building, duplicate content, multiple site issues, video optimization, site optimization, usability and more from them! In short: ok, `cause you meet white and black hats on one place! And coffee was a huge assistent during the week. Not sure how often I used foursqaure @starbucks.

But this recap shouldn‘t be a typical SES New York recap at all, ´cause there are already so many awesome posts out there. For expample you should start with „8 Reasons Why We Never Miss SES New York!“ or our explido corporate blog posts „Rückblick SES (Search Engine Strategies) in New York 2010 – Tag 1“ or „explido Recap SES (Search Engine Strategies) in New York 2010“ both are written in German. This #sesny blog post is more over `bout my stay and meet up with people in New York City, but let‘s start now.

This time over 6.000 online-marketers from all over the world found the way to the Hilton New York in the Avenue of the Americas 1335. Believe it or not it‘s the world biggest conference with main focus on search, wow!

I‘ve met old friends from the online marketing branch and a lot of great people during the SESNY 2010 which is important for new projects and ideas for our customers!

Another reason why I‘ve attended this year the Search Engine Strategies in New York is to see what‘s cooking within our branch. By the way the SES New York was packed with more then 70 sessions, multiple keynotes, more then 100 exhibitors, networking events and parties!

My personal top 5 of 70 sessions:

  • Search Analytics – Meaningful SEO Metrics: Going Beyond the Numbers
  • Networking Workshop (Invite Only) – Optimizing Your Facebook Ads Campaign
  • OMS Track – Where Search and Social Media Collide: Real-Time Search and Twitter
  • Geek Track – Ad Networks & Exchanges: How the Search O/S is Changing the Display Game
  • Search & Social – The Business Value of Social Media

And of course no one should missed the White Hat Black Hat – Unconferenced Party after a long second #sesny day.

After a meeting on Friday morning till afternoon with our customers I had finally off till Sunday! It was a great opportunity to explore the city with all the awesome places to go… The night life is gorgeous as well (but this is nothing new) and to go by yellow cab e.g. to the Meatpacking District should be on your tour as go by subway to Downtown Manhattan.

If you’re a steak lover: You must step by at Wolfgang‘s Steakhouse (4 Park Avenue). The steak is unbelievable and if you have luck you can meet Wolfgang, too. If the weather is good Empire State Building is a must. This time the weather was fabulous and the view…

I’ve visited the New York Apple store (767 5th Avenue) and bought a mophie juice pack air. Now my iPhone has double time to rock, talk, surf (very important) and send messages. Now my iPhone 3G(S) specifications are:

  • Standby Time: Up to 270 hours
  • Talk Time: Up to 4.5 hours on 3G | Up to 9 (10(S)) hours on 2G
  • Internet Use: Up to 4.5 hours on 3G | Up to 5.4 (8(S)) hours on Wi-Fi
  • Audio Playback: Up to 20 (27(S)) hours
  • Video Playback: Up to 6 (9(S)) hours

During my trip there wasn‘t a line in front of the Apple store, but I‘m sure it was on the 3rd of April when Apple started to sell the iPad

I think I will wait till the iPad 3G will be available ’cause I’m often on the road…

The 18th Floor was a highlight, too. Don’t miss that place if you’re in New York. Had an awesome cocktail, too!

Once again (this time in my official SES Recap):

The whole SES (Search Engine Strategies) New York team did an amazing job! I had a great time not only at the SES NY 2010 but as well in New York City! But sometimes even a city like New York has a Biergarten it is not the same like… Home sweet home!
